Naomi
Fourth generation artist and musician Naomi Cherie began playing the violin at a young age when she inherited a 70 year old Czechoslovakian instrument from her mother. She played in school orchestras, wedding quartets and regional competitions throughout her youth. In college, Naomi chose to focus her primary studies on fine arts as a studio art major, however she continued to pursue her passion for music through participating in the University Orchestra and the UT Opera Society, as well as private lessons and music history courses at The University of Texas.
At age 18, when she got her hands on her first electric violin, Naomi began experimenting with new sounds, playing in bands and improvisation. Over the past 8 years she has played with several folk/pop/rock and experimental bands and has done recording work on multiple albums, rock operas and various projects. In 2009 Naomi performed at over 150 shows in the US, Canada and Europe when she joined internationally touring group Agent Ribbons. She also performed at a series of shows with acclaimed Scotish pop group Camera Obscura.
Naomi began teaching violin lessons while still in high school, her first pupil being her younger sister. When her sister quickly became the top student in her orchestra, Naomi's teachers and peers encouraged her to start teaching professionally. She has since taught students of all ages ranging from 4 to 54. With over 9 years of experience Naomi has worked with students from all walks of life-- from young children and pre-teens to busy engineers, lawyers and moms. She believes that anyone can learn to play no matter their background, age or experience level. "All it takes is a passion for music, a will to learn and lots of practice!"
Violin classes with Naomi will focus on developing a basic foundation in classical music and will start off with getting to know your instrument, developmental exercises and games, technique building, learning to read and understand sheet music, ear training and more. Most importantly students are encouraged to have fun and embrace the music!
In addition to teaching violin, Naomi is a founder and event coordinator at local multimedia arts group Lucy the Poodle Productions-- known for their interactive art and music shows and all inclusive community enrichment oriented events. Naomi also works with a program at a local elementary school that provides free music classes to children that come from low income families and is a dedicated third year volunteer at Girls Rock Camp Austin, a local nonprofit organization that empowers young women in music and gives scholarships to children with underprivileged backgrounds. Her other skills include photography, painting and graphic design.
